REMEMBRANCE WEEK 2018 IN COLDWATER

November 12, 2018

The month of November saw much activity at the Coldwater Legion, focused for the most part on Remembrance and Veterans appreciation.  Remembrance Week began with a Branch Colour Party taking part in a special Remembrance Service on Sunday November 4th at St. Andrew's Presbyterian Church.  Then our annual Remembrance Day ceremony was held at the Cenotaph on the 11th.  It was very well attended despite a weather forecast of chilling temperature and snow squalls. Thank you to all who attended.  This year's ceremony was particularly significant since we commemorated the 100th anniversary of the signing of the 1918 Armistice that put an end to the Great War.  In Coldwater, we marked this important milestone with the unveiling of a plaque with the names of the 23 local soldiers who made the ultimate sacrifice in the First World War.  And on a national level, people from communities across the country – including Coldwater - rang church bells 100 times at sunset on November 11, as part of the Bells of Peace initiative to mark the 100th anniversary of the 1918 Armistice.  As Remembrance Day also signalled the end of this year's Poppy Campaign, we wish to thank the many groups, local businesses and individuals who contributed in so many ways to the Coldwater Legion's Poppy Campaign.  Thank you to those Navy, Army and Air Force personnel from CFB Borden who marched and stood on parade with our local participants, and to those who attended as spectators.  Thank you to the "Pipes and Drums" Cadets from 724 "Midland Lions" Royal Canadian Air Cadet Squadron, for providing musical support during and after our parade.  Thank you to the members of our Ladies Auxiliary who do so much more than making these tasty little sandwiches.  And finally, thank you to all of you who contributed in any way to our Remembrance activities, even if it was simply by wearing a Poppy during those few November weeks.
